NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Kadhja Bonet’s “Dear Gina"

One of the highlights from Kadhja Bonet’s 2018 album Childqueen is the sublime, elegantly wasted “Delphine,” which opens with the lyrics “What’s it mean Delphine? . . . This letter you wrote to me.” The answer, according to Bonet herself, is contained in her new song “Dear Gina”—”If you’ve ever wondered what the letter said—this is it.”

A low key beat, Bonet’s ever-magnificent voice and flourishes of decadent keys combine to create a sweetly expressed rejection with a killer last line to finish the relationship abruptly: “Wherever you’re headed though, it’s not for me.” As the second recent single—after “For You (Many Selves Version)”—we can only hope that an album from this uniquely talented artist is on its way.

In the meantime, watch the intriguing video for “Dear Gina” below.
