NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Sophie Auster’s “Hey, Girlfriend”

March 27, 2022 Albumism Staff

Following last month’s release of the soaring “Let’s Get Lost” and its accompanying video, Sophie Auster has wasted precious little time in unveiling its successor single in the form of “Hey, Girlfriend.” Lifted from the singer-songwriter’s forthcoming EP Dancing With Strangers due for arrival May 6th, “Hey, Girlfriend” is a candid lamentation of a lost friendship.

“I wrote ‘Hey, Girlfriend’ about deep attachments between non-sexual female friends that include attraction, jealousy, and love,” Auster confides in an official statement. “There is no word in English for a passionate non-sexual friendship between women. Scholars have a term called ‘Romantic friendship,’ but it is not widely known or used in popular culture. I wanted to write this song about the feeling of loss after I drifted apart from my best friend growing up. I think it is a story that almost every woman in the world can relate to, but to my knowledge, there aren’t many songs written about it.”

Listen to “Hey, Girlfriend” and watch the official video for “Let’s Get Lost” below.
