NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Kadhja Bonet’s “For You (Many Selves Version)"

Kadhja Bonet’s unique brand of elegantly styled fragility has produced two albums (2016’s The Visitor and 2018’s Childqueen) filled with her inimitable vocal qualities. Bearing the influence of Rotary Connection and fusion queen Asha Puthli, Bonet has also cropped up on some high profile releases.

Having appeared alongside Childish Gambino and Anderson .Paak on their most recent albums, she returns with a single titled “For You (Many Selves Version).” While her divine voice is intact, the music offers a slightly different canvas for her to paint her vocal magic upon. A shuffling mid-tempo gem with trademark luscious harmonies and a saxophone solo that offers a throwback thrill to round the song off in style.

“When I wrote this song I wanted the ‘YOU’ to be ambiguous, but as time went on I realized it was important to me that the meaning come out,” Bonet reflects in an official statement. “This second arrangement and video was an opportunity to connect the subject to the song, and tell listeners what I believe. You can be your most reliable someone. Do it For You.”

Hopefully this is a sign that a full album is on its way, but for now make the most of Bonet’s return and her hauntingly beautiful vocal abilities.
