After putting in three decades of work, the renowned production crew Da Beatminerz are still committed to making rough and rugged hip-hop. Revered for their orchestration of multiple hip-hop classics including Black Moon’s Enta da Stage (1993) and Smif-N-Wessun’s Dah Shinin’ (1995), “Boom Bap ambassadors” Mr. Walt and Evil Dee are preparing to release Stifled Creativity, the duo’s first full-length LP in nearly two decades. For their initial offering from the album, they team with KRS-One, the man who practically put Boom-Bap on the map, to create “Seckle.”
Da Beatminerz and KRS have partnered numerous times over the past 20+ years. However, “Seckle” may be their best collaboration. The song pays homage to one of The Blastmaster’s best-known tracks, “My Philosophy,” while honoring his 1990s solo era. It also evokes KRS’s dedicated love of Jamaican music, as Da Beatminerz lay down heavy Reggae/Dancehall-inflected grooves.
"We have had the privilege to work with the great KRS-One for over 20 years now and this is the song we always wanted to make with him,” Mr. Walt explains in an official statement. “It is an honor and a pleasure.”
"It’s always dope working with KRS-One,” Evil Dee declares. “We always make those dope Boom Bap Joints with him. Word!”
“Seckle” packs a lot into its less-than-three-minutes runtime. KRS sounds as fresh and inspired as ever rapping over the muddy bassline and skanking guitar. The track is permeated with sweat and blunt smoke, capturing the feel of a crowded basement party on a sweltering summer night. It definitely succeeds in setting the stage for more uncompromised hip-hop from Da Beatminerz team.
