In the nearly two years since she unveiled her fourth studio album All Mirrors, which captured the #1 spot in our Best Albums of 2019 list, Angel Olsen has remained plenty productive. In August of last year, she released Whole New Mess, an intriguing collection of alternative versions of songs featured on All Mirrors. Two months ago in May, she presented Song of the Lark and Other Far Memories, a thoughtfully conceived box set comprised of the two aforementioned albums accompanied by a bonus disc of assorted rarities. Later that same month, she linked up with fellow singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten for the inspired collaborative single “Like I Used To.”
Today, she adds to her workhorse reputation by announcing the forthcoming release of Aisles, an EP of ‘80s era cover versions. Slated to arrive in digital form August 20th and physical formats September 24th, the five-track extended play features Olsen reimagining classics by Billy Idol (“Eyes Without A Face”), Men Without Hats (“Safety Dance”), Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (“If You Leave”), Alphaville (“Forever Young”) and Laura Branigan (“Gloria”). The latter interpolation is the first official single and can be enjoyed below, alongside the official video for Ms. Branigan’s version, itself a cover of the original song by Italian singer-songwriter Umberto Tozzi.
“I know it’s not really in my history to do something unintentional or just for the hell of it, but my connection to these songs is pretty straightforward,” Olsen explains in an official statement about the EP. “I just wanted to have a little fun and be a little more spontaneous, and I think I needed to remember that I could!”
