In 2013, there was a lot of “of the moment” pop that seemed to become stale as soon as it was heard. Thankfully, that year we also received the brilliant bright synth pop of CHVRCHES’ debut outing The Bones of What You Believe. While the album leans into its pop sensibilities, it does so in a way that elevates it above the fray, with smart, often bleak lyrical content and ear hooky melodies evident in songs like “The Mother We Share,” “Under the Tide,” and “Lungs.”
