BECK | Morning Phase
Capitol (2014)
Selected by Andy Healy
Beck’s Morning Phase might have given the GRAMMYs their WTF moment, but anyone paying attention to the beauty within Beck’s twelfth studio album wasn’t at all surprised. A sister album to the melancholic Sea Change (2002), Beck returns (after a prolonged studio hiatus) with an album full of enveloping warmth and musical riches. With vocals that seem to float just beyond reach, Beck crafts some of his most heartfelt moments. Songs like “Morning,” “Blue Moon,” “Heart is a Drum” and “Waking Light” paint beautiful musical landscapes that glimmer in the warmth of the production and invite you in. Without a doubt, my pick for album of 2014.
