Not that we ever need an excuse to extol the many virtues of Rufus Wainwright’s music, but he has given us plenty to celebrate as of late, with the recent 25th anniversary of his eponymous 1998 debut album and the arrival of his new album Folkocracy. The latter offering finds the award-winning singer-songwriter-musician reimagining classic folk songs in collaboration with an impressive cohort of special guests including ANOHNI, Andrew Bird, David Byrne, Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, Susanna Hoffs, Chaka Khan, John Legend, and Chris Stills, as well as his family members Anna McGarrigle, Lucy Wainwright Roche and Martha Wainwright, among others.
Preceded by singles “Down in the Willow Garden,” “Heading for Home” and “Harvest,” Folkocracy will be supported by a spring/summer tour. “The older I get, the more I appreciate how valuable my folk knowledge is, to have had it ingrained in me as a child,” Wainwright explains in an official statement. “I’m from a bona fide folkocracy who mixed extensively with other folkocracies such as the Seegers and the Thompsons. I spun off into opera and pop. Now I’m back where it all began.”
