NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Tanika Charles’ “Rent Free”

Toronto-based singer-songwriter Tanika Charles returns three years after her stellar album The Gumption with news of her third album on Record Kicks. The seductively titled Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly is due for release on April 8th and features up-and-coming Toronto rapper Dijah SB and multi-disciplinary artist Khari McClelland.

Alongside the welcome news of Miss Charles’ forthcoming album, the song “Rent Free” is available to stream below and it shows that the twice Juno-nominated artist has lost none of her class and style. Swooning backing vocals, a driving backbeat and some delicate, jazzy guitar work light up a tale of a past lover who steadfastly refuses to leave the singer’s mind.

The album was recorded (unsurprisingly) during periods in and out of lockdown and represents Charles’ attempt to make sense of the seismic changes we’ve all had to make over that time. It promises growth and maturity, and if it’s as great as her previous two albums, we are in for a treat.
