2021 was a hell of a year for Arlo Parks. Her debut album Collapsed In Sunbeams crushed almost everything in its path. Nominated for nearly every award going and winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize here in Britain, people the world over fell in love with her unique lyrical sensibility and winning soul-pop sound.
She is clearly not one to let the grass grow under her feet as she has released a new single, “Softly.” With her endearingly light, wistful vocals intact, an incessant shuffling beat and some fragile piano lines, it continues her winning run and begs a partner to let her down easy, lest they break her heart too deeply.
Whether this signals a new album on the horizon or not, the song is a great new entry into the singer-songwriter’s nascent canon and it is well worth drifting away with as Spring comes into view.
