Michaela Anne has revealed that her new album Oh To Be That Free will be released June 10th courtesy of Yep Roc Records. Though recorded prior to an emotionally trying period during which the then-pregnant singer-songwriter’s mother suffered a debilitating stroke, the eleven introspective songs that comprise the follow-up to 2019’s Desert Dove were soon recontextualized as a form of personal catharsis.
“In the many days and months I sat by my mother’s bedside in the hospital, not knowing if she’d ever be able to speak, walk or resemble her former self, I sang these songs to her, as well as to the baby growing in my belly, over and over,” the Nashville-based musician recalls in an official statement. “I let my own words from the songs sink into my consciousness as though they weren’t my own.”
Following the unveiling of “Who You Are” last month, she has shared the album-opening track “I’m Only Human,” a poignant meditation on relinquishing control, aided by Kristin Weber’s string arrangement and supporting vocals by Madi Diaz and Lauren Balthrop.
Listen to “I’m Only Human” below and be sure to mark June 10th in your calendars for Oh To Be That Free’s arrival.
