NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Michaela Anne’s “Child of the Wind”

July 9, 2019 Albumism Staff

Last September, we had the always-great pleasure of witnessing yet another phenomenal performance by one of our favorite contemporary singer-songwriters, Courtney Marie Andrews. And while Ms. Andrews predictably delivered a stunning show that evening, the most memorable moment for us occurred before she even took the stage. Though we were admittedly unfamiliar with Michaela Anne prior to the night’s festivities, her opening set was an unexpected revelation, introducing our ears to a gifted, graceful voice that demands to be heard.

Hence why we’re thrilled to learn that the Brooklyn-to-Nashville transplant’s third studio album Desert Dove will make landfall later this year, on September 27th. The follow-up to her 2016 LP Bright Lights and the Fame and her first album to be released by her new support system at Yep Roc Records, Desert Dove is preceded by lead single “By Our Design” and the just-released “Child of the Wind,” a soaring, symphonic soliloquy about life on the open road.

“[Desert Dove], for me, highlights the gray area, the nuance of emotional life and relationships that seems to be harder to convey in today’s modes of communication and limited attention spans: short excerpts on Instagram or Twitter paragraphs,” Michaela Anne explains in an official statement. “Nothing is black and white, solely good or bad. Who we are, how we live, how we love, what we desire or reject, it’s all full of contradictions and confusions. I wanted to explore that through my songs with care, depth, reality as well as light-heartedness, fun and fantasy.”

Listen to “Child of the Wind” and watch the video for “By Our Design” below. And we strongly recommend that you try to catch Michaela Anne on tour this summer and fall.
