NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Melanie C’s “High Heels” Featuring Sink The Pink

November 7, 2019 Quentin Harrison

Twenty years ago, Melanie C had her hands full as both a Spice Girl and a burgeoning solo recording act; fast forward to today and it seems as if that pace never slowed on either front. From the recently lauded Spice Girls stadium shows in the United Kingdom, to her more expansive individual touring treks with the British LGBTQ troupe Sink the Pink, Ms. Chisholm has been busy.

It should come as no surprise then that the first taste of new music from the pop powerhouse would be revealed now in the form of the anthemic “High Heels.” The song is a dazzling slice of synth-pop that has Chisholm returning to the dance genre, a sound that she’s used at various intervals throughout her solo career for those that have been with her since Northern Star (1999). The equally engaging music video (directed by Sylvie Weber) has Chisholm’s one-time touring mates Sink the Pink join her and the ensuing visual party is as fun as the track itself.

With her eighth album still waiting in the wings for release—likely sometime in early 2020—“High Heels” proves that Chisholm is still as sonically potent as ever.

Quentin Harrison is the author of ‘Record Redux: Spice Girls,’ the first written overview of the Spice Girls’ musical history spanning 1996 to 2016. For more of his perspective on their collective and individual recordings, his book is available physically or digitally now. Additional books in his Record Redux series cover the discographies of Carly Simon, Donna Summer and Madonna. Harrison’s forthcoming book ‘Record Redux: Kylie Minogue’ will be available in November 2019.
