The nearly eleven-year wait for Liz Phair’s seventh studio album will be relieved in just a few weeks, when the acclaimed singer-songwriter formally unveils Soberish on June 4th. Phair and the support team over at her new label Chrysalis have been steadily whetting appetites for the follow-up to 2010’s Funstyle over the past few months, by way of the project’s initial offerings “Hey Lou” and “Spanish Doors,” and now the latest primer for the album has arrived in the form of the subdued, introspective track “In There.”
“I found my inspiration for Soberish by delving into an early era of my music development, my art school years spent listening to Art Rock and New Wave music non-stop on my Walkman,” Phair explains in an official statement. “The English Beat, The Specials, Madness, R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People, Yazoo, the Psychedelic Furs, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson, and the Cars. The city came alive for me as a young person, the bands in my headphones lending me the courage to explore.”
