NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Juliana Hatfield’s “Mouthful of Blood”

As one of the most prolific and productive singer-songwriters of the past three decades, Juliana Hatfield’s legacy within the alternative and indie rock music landscapes is already solidified for eternity. However, thirty-five years since co-founding Blake Babies back in 1986, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist continues to craft fresh, stirring new music that reflects the unyielding ambition of an ever-restless creative spirit.

Over an ebullient, guitar-driven arrangement, Hatfield’s new single “Mouthful of Blood” examines the complicated nature of exercising your freedom of expression without fear of repercussion. The melody-rich song represents the initial offering from her forthcoming nineteenth studio album Blood, due in stores May 14th as the follow-up to 2019’s pair of releases Weird and Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police.

“I always love coming up with melodies and then trying to fit words into them—it’s like doing a puzzle,” Hatfield explains in an official statement. “And I always find places to use the Mellotron flutes and strings, on every album, because those sounds are so beautiful to me. They are a nice counterpoint to the damaged lyrical content.”
