NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Sarah Murray’s “Once Upon a Time”

With unmistakable echoes of Hounds of Love era Kate Bush bestowing a sense of immediate familiarity, irresistible flair, and insistent suspense-building, Sarah Murray has blessed us with one of the new year’s most sublimely crafted singles thus far, in the form of “Once Upon a Time.”

Propelled by the Cork, Ireland based singer-songwriter’s commanding, versatile voice and introspective musings about the dissolution of a relationship, her latest collaboration with producer John Burke and piano/keyboard maestro Pat Crowley—known for his collaborative work with the acclaimed Mary Black—follows a rather productive 2020, during which she released a handful of singles and a four-track, self-titled EP.

“All of my work reflects the world around me, my own life experiences, and those closest to me,” Murray confides. “I write when I have something to say, when I want to get something off my chest so that I can clear the way forward and move on.”

A stirring composition in its own right, “Once Upon a Time” serves as the harbinger of many more musical revelations to come from the ambitious songstress, as she continues work on her forthcoming full-length album. And while we eagerly await its formal arrival, we’re happy to further indulge our ears in the generous helping of terrific tracks available to listen to below.
