NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Garbage’s “The Men Who Rule The World”

When we revealed our list of 30 Albums We Can’t Wait to Hear in 2021 back in January, no artist garnered more excitement among Albumism’s readers than Garbage. The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response directed toward even the most cursory, devoid-of-details preview of their forthcoming seventh studio album offered further testament to the band’s well-cemented legacy and enduring relevance, 25-plus years after they formally emerged by way of their acclaimed eponymous debut album Garbage (1995).

Nearly five years have elapsed since the foursome—comprised of Duke Erikson, Shirley Manson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig—blessed the world with their sixth studio affair Strange Little Birds (2016), but now, thankfully, the much-anticipated arrival of its successor is officially drawing near. “The Men Who Rule The World,” the initial offering from their new LP entitled No Gods No Masters, has made landfall and it’s propelled by the signature sonic energy and multi-layered arrangement that we’ve come to expect from the group, complemented by Ms. Manson’s incisive ruminations that examine “the men who rule the world” and the “fucking mess” they’re so prone to making.

“This is our seventh record, the significant numerology of which affected the DNA of its content: the seven virtues, the seven sorrows, and the seven deadly sins,” the band have explained in an official statement. “It was our way of trying to make sense of how fucking nuts the world is and the astounding chaos we find ourselves in. It’s the record we felt that we had to make at this time.”

Watch the accompanying official video below and stay tuned for additional details about the album, which is slated for a June 11th release.
