NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Akemi Fox’s “See You Soon”

March 31, 2022 Patrick Corcoran

Just over a year ago, Manchester singer-songwriter Akemi Fox released her debut EP Colour You In (2020). Gathering praise and attention from BBC Radio 1Xtra and Tidal along the way, it showcased an interesting new voice to add to the growing community of UK soul acts. Filtered through neo-soul with dashes of Frank Ocean, Akemi showed a winning touch in creating something befitting her obvious influences.

Next up is the lead single “See You Soon” from her sophomore EP due to be released this summer. Written by Fox and produced by the ever-excellent Swindle (Kojey Radical, Ghetts, Joy Crookes), it is a stripped back, summertime love song. The acoustic guitar and her zephyr-light vocals are a great combination and the shimmering keys only add to the dreamy feeling that permeates it. Throw in some delicious backing vocals and the perfectly balanced drums and bass and you have a cocktail of carefree, laid-back vibes.

As a taster of things to come, it is perfectly placed to take advantage of the spring sunshine and remind you that the winter must come to an end eventually. “See You Soon” is well worth adding to your libraries and whets the appetite for the forthcoming EP in the summertime.
