CARLY RAE JEPSEN | Emotion
604/Schoolboy/Interscope (2015)
Selected by Mark J. Marraccini
This album is pure, unadulterated pop joy from start to finish. Addictive sing-alongs like “Run Away With Me,” “I Really Like You,” and “Gimme Love” are clarion calls back to a time when pop songs (and pop stars) didn’t try so hard to be cool or clever, they just made us feel. With top-notch collaborators like Sia, Dev Hynes and Shellback in the mix, Jepsen released one of the decade’s truly ebullient and essential pop efforts that solidified herself as an emotive and energetic songwriter, and successfully evaded that dreaded “One Hit Wonder” label.
