High Fidelity
Hollywood (1999)
Selected by Andy Healy
A story that centers around an avid record collector, plays with such iconic themes as Top Fives and Desert Island Discs, and has a record store as its home base better have a great soundtrack. High Fidelity does.
Like a day spent in said record store, the soundtrack takes you through classic tracks by The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, and The Velvet Underground whilst introducing you to new(ish) music with spins by Stereolab, Royal Trux, and Smog. And of course the reason you bought the soundtrack was for The Beta Band’s “Dry The Rain.”
High Fidelity, whilst being an amazing film (and book, and now revamped TV series), is the near perfect compilation soundtrack that has something for everyone without losing its voice or selling out in the process. Even Jack Black’s take on “Let’s Get It On” doesn’t seem that out of place in the running list.
