Five years on from the release of Dirty Computer, which Albumism recognized as our #1 album-of-the-year in 2018, the multi-dimensionally gifted Janelle Monáe has blessed us with her fourth studio affair. Preceded by the dynamic one-two punch of singles “Float” and “Lipstick Lover,” THE AGE OF PLEASURE finds the charismatic artist delving deep into the more escapist, hedonistic realms of the human condition.
“I think being an artist gets lonely,” Monáe recently confided during her Rolling Stone cover-story interview. “Most people don’t understand what’s going on in my brain. Community has been so helpful to me; it’s beautiful that I have a title called The Age of Pleasure because it actually re-centers me. It’s not about an album anymore. I’ve changed my whole fucking lifestyle.”
