Thirty-eight years after André Cymone dropped “Lipstick Lover” on his 1985 album A.C., Janelle Monáe has delivered her original 21st century take on the concept, accompanied by an, er, aesthetically inspired video. A refreshingly candid ode to indulging in hedonistic endeavors, the track is the second single to be lifted from the multimedia phenomenon’s just-announced fourth studio album THE AGE OF PLEASURE, due to arrive in stores June 9th as the much-anticipated follow-up to her modern-day classic Dirty Computer—which Albumism named as our #1 Album-of-the-Year for 2018—and the recently released single “Float.”
“As we enter into The Age Of Pleasure, ‘Lipstick Lover’ is our freeassmothafucka anthem inspired by f.a.m. for f.a.m.,” Monáe explains in an official statement. “This is our oasis made with love, rooted in self acceptance, throbbing in self discovery, and signed with cherry red kisses from me to you.”
