Nearly 30 years since Portishead released their trailblazing debut album Dummy in 1994, the band’s co-founder and vocalist Beth Gibbons has unveiled her debut solo album Lives Outgrown. Arriving courtesy of Domino, Lives Outgrown is co-produced by Gibbons and James Ford (Depeche Mode, Florence + The Machine, Jessie Ware) with additional production by Talk Talk co-founder Lee Harris. Preceded by lead singles “Floating on a Moment” and “Reaching Out,” the 10-track album explores themes of ageing, motherhood and loss.
“People started dying,” Gibbons confides in an official statement. “When you’re young, you never know the endings, you don’t know how it’s going to pan out. You think, ‘We’re going to get beyond this. It’s going to get better.’ Some endings are hard to digest.”
“I realized what life was like with no hope, and that was a sadness I’d never felt,” she continues. “Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do.”
Gibbons previously took a brief recording hiatus from Portishead to craft Out of Season (2002), her collaborative album with Rustin Man (a.k.a. Paul Webb) and most recently, she contributed vocals to Kendrick Lamar’s “Mother I Sober” from his 2022 album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
