The 1975 have made a habit of dropping several singles well in advance of their ensuing albums, and the lead up to 2020’s Notes on a Conditional Form—due to arrive February 21st—is no exception. Already the band has blasted through the punk fueled “People” with its distorted panicked vocals and amped up guitar wails, and the Greta Thunberg narrated “The 1975”—not to be confused with the trilogy of takes of “The 1975” from their previous outings.
And now they have dropped the dark garage inspired “Frail State of Mind.” As a band that defies being boxed in, despite desperate attempts by the press, “Frail State of Mind” is a trippy atmospheric journey best enjoyed with the lights down and the volume up. It’s honest, intimate, and anxiety filled lyrics are both comforting and filled with empathy. “Frail” won’t be the song that lights up the charts—and for that, it’s a bold move. But rather than dole out a “hit” from the album, The 1975 are happy delivering a mood, a glimpse inside the psyche that is building around the new venture. Like the more atmospheric, ambient and experimental songs in their catalogue, it will be best enjoyed in the company of sweaty strangers blissing out to its live performance while neon lights flicker and pass us by.
