NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Thandi Phoenix’s “Overdrive”

There are moments in life when you just know that what you are witnessing is the birth of something incredibly special. Back in early 2013, I had one of those moments when I was invited to an intimate show at The Vanguard in Newtown featuring a then-unknown Thandi Phoenix.

Fast forward to 2021 and over the past eight years, Phoenix has toured with some of the best (Rudimental, Tinashe, Jhene Aiko), released a slew of singles and garnered even more attention with a well-received self-titled EP in late 2019. But it is her recent release, the Paul Mac written and produced “Overdrive” (with help from Handsome) that has seen the Sydney local continue her dominance in dance music territory that could best be described as electro-bop.

With an arrangement that is warmly familiar and encourages you to dominate the dancefloor, but with a voice that could easily be compared to Billie Holiday, “Overdrive” manages to capitalize on a classic house music sound, whilst still keeping it fresh. Something that even the boys from Disclosure would be jelly of. With soaring vocals and a thumping base, Phoenix and Paul Mac deliver a transfixing track to shake off the COVID blues.
