NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: STR4TA’s “Lazy Days” Featuring Emma-Jean Thackray

October 21, 2022 Patrick Corcoran

In Spring last year we were treated to a breezily funky gem from STR4TA (comprised of Incognito’s Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick and DJ Gilles Peterson) that brought Brit Funk back from an undeserved hiatus. I was also fortunate enough to talk to the duo and Peterson revealed that a second project for the group was already under way.

Due for arrival November 11th, the follow-up to 2021’s Aspects is entitled STR4TASFEAR and the third single from it arrives today complete with a guest spot of impeccable credentials. Fresh from her Jazz FM award win for best album with Yellow, Emma-Jean Thackray hops on board the Brit Funk spaceship and sets a course for other realms alongside the venerable pair of UK funksters.

With hyperactive hi-hats, Thackray’s trumpet and vocals in perfect harmony and Bluey’s intergalactic bass, it blasts off to cosmic exploration. It’s a great teaser for what funkiness might dwell on the rest of the album, as it also features Theo Croker and British soul deity Omar. Brit funk is back with a bang—if, indeed, it ever went anywhere.
