NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Sharon Van Etten & Angel Olsen’s “Like I Used To”

Back in 2019, Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen both featured prominently in our celebration of the year’s best albums, with the former’s Remind Me Tomorrow cracking the top ten and the latter’s All Mirrors snagging top honors as our #1 Album of the Year.

Fast forward 16 months or so and the acclaimed singer-songwriters have intriguingly joined creative forces with the collaborative single “Like I Used To,” unveiled earlier today, accompanied by the Kimberly Stuckwisch directed video. Dynamic voices on their own, their pairing packs an evocative and enveloping punch for what we hope is simply the first taste of subsequent collaborations to come from the Jagjaguwar labelmates.

“Even though we weren’t super close, I always felt supported by Angel and considered her a peer in this weird world of touring,” Van Etten confides in an official statement. “We highway high-fived many times along the way…I finally got the courage in June of 2020 to reach out to see if she would want to sing together. I got greedy and quickly sent her a track I had been working on.”

“I’ve met with Sharon here and there throughout the years and have always felt too shy to ask her what she’s been up to or working on,” Olsen explains. “The song reminded me immediately of getting back to where I started, before music was expected of me, or much was expected of me, a time that remains pure and real in my heart.”
