“I just make what feels good and natural to me, and don’t think about it too much past that,” Rosie Lowe confided when asked about her genre-blurring songcraft during our 2019 interview. “I find it impossible to hear what my music sounds like, as I’m far too close to it to be able to hear it, but I’m always happy to hear people say they can’t put it in a box. I’m not a fan of boxes.”
Speaking of boxes, however, a wonderful surprise gift has just arrived in the form of Lowe’s unexpected yet unequivocally sublime mixtape-slash-EP Now, You Know. Her first official offering since her acclaimed 2019 album YU, the 17-minute affair may be brief, but it nevertheless represents an intriguingly insightful view into how her distinctive songwriting continues to evolve and excite the senses, as aided by her remotely executed creative partnership with collaborators including Andrew Sarlo, Tom Henry, AVI, and Tom Driessler.
A harbinger of more melodic magic and radiant reveries to come from the Devon-born, London-based artist, the project’s standout moments include the percussion-rich “No Idea,” the shimmering soul of “Paris, Texas,” and the immersive groove of “Would You Stay?”
“Not being able to physically be in a room with people crystallised the opportunity to see this project through on my own whilst collaborating remotely with different people I love and admire wherever they were based,” Lowe explains in an official statement. “I felt a new sense of freedom to be able to create something away from a label schedule and it left me with this strong desire to create something that captured where I was at without overthinking it.”
