Róisín Murphy’s latest track “Murphy’s Law” sets the dance floor straight with its heavy disco vibes and carefree attitude.
Disco is a genre that has been a part of the creation and foundation of house music, and something that Murphy has never shied away from and many times called upon in her music. Reconnecting with longtime collaborator and producer DJ Parrot (who also worked on her 2019 singles “Narcissus” and “Incapable”), Murphy explains in a recent statement that “’Murphy’s Law’ is our crack at a straight up, straightforward, no-frills, disco standard.”
She continues, “Oh and it’s the story of my life. It’s about the nature of the past, it’s often a difficult thing to outrun but it can also be quite comforting...When is it valuable heritage, and when is it something that's holding you back? Time and time again I return to Sheffield and my friends there. I go when I need to reconnect to a scene and to music that’s about something! And to feel the belonging.”
This is yet another track from Murphy for which said “belonging” and depth transcend the constraints of traditional musical boundaries, to allow for the freedom where substance and quality combine to create something so much more than just a corker of a dance floor hit.
