NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Marina Kaye’s “The Whole 9”

As Albumism’s evolving footprint continues to expand and an increasing number of eager artists, publicists and label folks have taken notice of our platform, our inbox is being pounded by a seemingly incessant stream of requests for new music coverage. We’re admittedly challenged to keep up with all of it.

Nevertheless, it serves as welcome validation that more and more people are taking our staff’s passion for music (and aversion to pretension) seriously, amidst the other more established sites in the space. We wish that we could accommodate all of these inquiries and shine a light toward all of the rising, ambitious talent out there, but alas, we cannot. Only a small fraction of these inbound messages actually break through and make our ears truly perk up.

A prime case in point is a note that recently arrived via the publicist for one Marina Kaye. Though Kaye has amassed an expansive, loyal following and multi-platinum status across the Atlantic in Europe on the strength of her first two albums (2015’s Fearless and 2017’s Explicit), the French singer-songwriter remains a relatively unknown entity to audiences here in the States. But this is likely (and hopefully) about to change due to the recent arrival of her polished, powerful new single “The Whole 9.”

Bolstered by a haunting, atmospheric electro-pop arrangement, the arresting track finds the 22-year-old Kaye revealing an emotional candor and vulnerability seldom heard in such convincing, compelling fashion. Suffice to say that it required just one casual listen for us to be drawn in to the song’s magnetic allure, and now we’re hooked.

“My childhood resulted in some deep scars leaving me with a complicated personality where things tend to be either very black or, less often totally white,” Kaye confides in an official statement. “Anyone wanting to enter my life, or keep up with me, has to try to deal with this without hurting me. I’m getting much better at managing my personality, but it will always be there. Building a lasting relationship means this person has to understand my past and accept this. The song is about letting this person into my life, with a reminder of how this can turn out.”

Watch the video for “The Whole 9” below and stay tuned for much more music to come from Ms. Kaye.
