Listen to Leona Naess’ New Album ‘Brood X’

June 5, 2022 Justin Chadwick

Artist: Leona Naess
Album: Brood X
Label: Messynaess/Awal
Released: June 3, 2022

“Sing to me only / Carry tunes slowly / Melodies is where I’m strong,” Leona Naess sings on “Bring On The Lonely,” one of the many standout moments to be heard on her just-released fifth studio album Brood X. Indeed, Naess’ penchant for merging her crystalline vocals with memorable melodies has defined her sterling songcraft dating back to her acclaimed 2000 debut album Comatised and it’s once again on full, glorious display here on her first album in nearly 14 years.

Although a relatively lean affair comprised of 9 songs across its 30-minute running time, Brood X unfolds as a powerfully evocative document of Naess’ experiences and self-awareness as an artist, woman, mother and daughter. “With this record, I mostly tried to make each song about its own thing,” Naess explained to Harper’s BAZAAR in April. “So there's a song about my husband, there's a song about my mother, there's a song about an old love, there's a song about each of my kids. They all have their own universe. It is about being a mother, but it's also just about being alive.”
