Katie Melua is no stranger to palatial pop music.
From the moment she arrived on the scene with Call off the Search (2003), Melua’s penchant for intricate adult contemporary fare propelled her to immediate notoriety. Now, as the Georgian born, British reared vocalist and songwriter prepares for the reveal of her forthcoming eight studio set—the appropriately titled Album No. 8, due out October 16th—she demonstrates that her aptitude with that sort of song stock hasn’t diminished.
Case in point, her current offering “Your Longing Is Gone” follows behind the equally impressive sequence of singles from Album No. 8: “Leaving the Mountain,” “Airtime” and “A Love Like That.” Like these anterior selections, “Your Longing Is Gone” is just as cinematically expansive and platforms Melua’s inimitable vocal presence gorgeously. But it is the bittersweet lyrics for “Your Longing Is Gone” that possess a kind of immersive intimacy that makes it stand out from what has already been presented for Album No. 8, thus far.
As it is, “Your Longing Is Gone” joins with its foregoing sister singles to form an exciting preview of a record that is likely to contain even more enthralling entries from Ms. Melua.
