NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Katie Melua’s “Joy”

The success of Katie Melua’s most recent collection Album No. 8 has been a bright spot in a year otherwise fraught with heartache and unrest. The announcement of her first-ever livestream concert event at the legendary Rivoli Ballroom (in London) on December 4, 2020 has only extended the positivity of this project further. Subsequently, the release of “Joy”—the fifth and likely final single to be lifted from the long player—feels like the cherry atop an already triumphant cake.

Like its anterior singles “A Love Like That,” “Airtime,” “Leaving the Mountain” and “Your Longing Is Gone,” “Joy” is a musical and visual feast for audiences. It features a lush acoustic arrangement that exquisitely frames Melua’s vocal tone and leaves the listener wanting more. The accompanying video depicts both an adult Melua in performance, a younger Melua (as portrayed by Sophie Khutsishvili) and a cameo from her own real-life grandmother, Tsaro Nozadze. Melua also commissioned Keti Devdariani—a renowned Georgian screenwriter—to storyboard the charming tale told in the clip for “Joy,” which was filmed in the United Kingdom and Georgia by Mariam Sitchinava.

The combination of this current single and Melua’s forthcoming livestream show will undoubtedly close 2020 on a welcome high note for her and all of us.
