NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Czarface & MF DOOM’s “Nautical Depth”

February 10, 2018 Jesse Ducker

Artist: Czarface & MF DOOM
Song: “Nautical Depth”
Album: Czarface Meets Metal Face! (due in stores March 30th)
Pre-Order: Amazon | iTunes

It’s satisfying when everything comes together as it should. A collaborative album between Metal Faced villain MF DOOM and super-trio Czarface (comprised of Wu-Tang Clan’s most underrated Inspectah Deck and Boston legends 7L & Esoteric) seems like exactly the type of no-brainer that would never actually happen. But lo and behold, they announced the release of their impending album Czarface Meets Metal Face!, the follow-up to Czarface’s 2017 album First Weapon Drawn which will be available on March 30th. As a welcome bonus, they’ve also released the project’s first single “Nautical Depth.” DOOM and Czarface previously linked for “Ka-Bang” on Every Hero Needs a Villain (2015), the latter’s sophomore album.

If “Nautical Depth” is any indication, hip-hop heads should be optimistic of what’s to come. DOOM, Deck, and Esoteric all shine over warped, feedback-ridden electric guitar loops and a menacing bassline. Given Eso’s avowed love for all things Star Wars, it’s a surprise to hear Deck get the first reference in to the legendary space opera, proclaiming himself “Lord Vader to a Kylo Ren.”

DOOM sounds positively spritely during his verse. It’s a welcome change, given how he’s sounded unmotivated, exhausted, or downright unhealthy on a few of his recent guest appearances . Esoteric wraps things up nicely, unsurprisingly weaving in references to Nick Fury, Wolverine, and Batman. Instead of a hook, we get some dancehall tinged trash-talking, which fits the mid ‘90s feel of the song.

March 30th can’t come soon enough.
