NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Ben Watt’s “Sunlight Follows The Night”

September 27, 2019 Albumism Staff

As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of Everything But The Girl’s Temperamental (1999) today, we’re also celebrating the arrival of new music courtesy of group co-founder Ben Watt. Lifted from his upcoming fourth solo album Storm Damage due in stores January 31st, “Sunlight Follows the Night” is a plaintive, piano-driven examination of love, loss and redemption that represents his first new studio recording since his acclaimed 2016 LP Fever Dream.

“The ten songs [on Storm Damage] came out of an intense period of personal anguish and political anger,” Watt confided in an official statement. “My closest half-brother died unexpectedly in 2016, only four years after my half-sister,” I got stuck for a year, angry inside and angry at the political world casually detonating around me. I felt half powerless, half driven. When the songs finally emerged, some were dark, yes, but there is always room for light. Always. I just tried to put that across.”

Watch the beautifully filmed video for “Sunlight Follows The Night” directed by Rahim Moledina below.
