NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Ben Rector’s “Old Friends”

June 21, 2018 Grant Walters

Artist: Ben Rector
Song: “Old Friends”
Album: Magic (due in stores June 22)
Upcoming Tour: Dates

Tulsa-born indie singer-songwriter Ben Rector recently released the video to his latest single “Old Friends,” a charming sentimental vignette that reunites the members of his high school band Euromart in the garage of his childhood home. It’s imagery that’s tough not to find heartwarming or relatable, even if music wasn’t the thing you and your mates consorted over late into the evening.

With a mixture of wistfulness and gratitude, Rector’s full-bodied pipes glide over the track’s jubilant blooms of pulsing keys and percussion claps. Undeniably radio-ready, it will certainly pack its biggest punch when his fans will inevitably get to sing the verses to the rafters with Rector during his upcoming summer tour.

"I wrote 'Old Friends' after a conversation with my mom about keeping up with my best friend from high school," Rector told Billboard’s Taylor Weatherby last month. "Towards the end of the call she said 'you know what they say, you can't make old friends.' I sat down to write and was immediately flooded with memories from growing up. It struck me how powerful that feeling was, that I missed both the people I grew up with and the naivety of that time more than I realized.”

“Old Friends” is a glimpse of Rector’s seventh studio album Magic, which arrives June 22nd via OK Kid Recordings. A 28-date supporting tour will follow starting on September 19 at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis and concluding on November 17 at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas.
