NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: Arlo Parks’ “Weightless”

Arlo Parks’ debut album Collapsed In Sunbeams took the music world by storm. Released in 2021, it won the Mercury Music Prize as well as receiving both BRIT and GRAMMY nominations. The success it achieved brought the opportunity to tour the US extensively but that was cut short in September 2022 as Parks took steps to protect her mental health and preserve her energies.

All of which might lead you to imagine that a follow-up to the extremely successful debut might be some time away. That thankfully is not to be the case, as she has just announced the forthcoming release of My Soft Machine on May 26th courtesy of Transgressive Records and the first single from the project entitled “Weightless.” Parks describes the single as an expression of “the painful experience of caring deeply about someone who only gives you tiny breadcrumbs of affection” and it finds her keen lyrical flair fully intact.

The album will feature Parks navigating the ever-turbulent waters of adult life, taking in such topics as the substance abuse of friends around her, the joys and challenges of being in love for the first time and negotiating grief and PTSD—those experiences allied to her poetic lyrics leaves expectation for the follow up to her stellar debut surging. Alongside the album comes news of a UK and European tour in September, so the break clearly did its job. Arlo Parks is back and ready to thrill us once more.
