With her retro-soul sonnets, Andra Day captured my attention in 2015 with her stunning debut Cheers to the Fall. Calling on the spirits of Etta James, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday, Day holds her own as she mixes classic production with modern sensibilities. With rich golden dripping vocals and brassy vibes, Day’s smoky vocals draw you in and entrance you. Songs like “Forever Mine,” “Rearview,” “Gin & Juice (Let Go My Hand)” and “Red Flags” allow Day to paint with all colors of emotive hues. With powerhouse vocals at her disposal, Day knows when to restrain and when to let fly, as she does on the empowering “Rise Up” and embracing “Cheers to the Fall.” A must-hear debut album.
