Garden State
Epic (2004)
Selected by Andy Healy
Garden State is the charming little film that could. A mix of humor and heart, it captures the hopes and realities of early adulthood so perfectly. With writer-director Zach Braff also sharing duties as the compiler of the soundtrack, he creates a beautiful mixtape of moods that stands alone in its own right.
From the sweet optimism of Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic” to the heartfelt lament of “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You” by Colin Hay, to the wistful “Blue Eyes” by Cary Brothers, this soundtrack accurately scores the emotional heartbeat of the movie. With two blissful tracks by The Shins (including the one that will change your life, “New Slang”) and a nod to Simon & Garfunkel thrown in for good measure, Garden State provides a soft reflective glow to any mood you’re in.
