De La Soul have unveiled their new studio album Cabin In The Sky courtesy of Mass Appeal, preceded by the Pete Rock-produced lead single “The Package” and the second official single “Day In The Sun (Gettin’ Wit U)” featuring Q-Tip and Yummy Bingham.
The group’s first studio LP since 2016’s and the Anonymous Nobody… and founding member David “Dave” Jolicoeur’s passing in 2023, the new project is the latest offering in Mass Appeal’s “Legend Has It” series that has recently featured new albums by hip-hop heroes Slick Rick, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and Mobb Deep.
“Cabin In The Sky lives in that space between loss and light,” Posdnuos explains in an official statement. “It’s about the pain we carry and the joy that somehow still finds us. This album is therapy and celebration at the same time. There’s a vulnerability in these songs, because everything we’ve been through has brought us to this moment, to this album, honoring what we’ve lost and lifting up what still remains. That duality. That’s life, and that’s De La.”
In addition to featuring musical contributions from their late friend and colleague Dave (a.k.a. Trugoy The Dove), Cabin In The Sky includes collaborations from an impressive crew of guests including DJ Premier, Killer Mike, Yukimi from Little Dragon, Common, Nas and Black Thought.
