Kylie Minogue is a force.
That force is comprised of many things, none more prevalent than her uncanny ability to not only understand change, but continually achieve it in the most organic and authentic way that, simply put, is “pure Kylie.” Another major part of her musical identity—which has probably been her most enduring and sustainable quality—is her workhorse-like devotion to her craft.
Not content with simply releasing a global smash LP in the form of Golden back in April of 2018, Minogue set out on a world tour to promote her fourteenth studio album. Continuing this unstoppable work ethic, she then released a two-disc, career-spanning compilation Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection a little over a year after Golden’s release. Some fans were not happy with the two-disc format, as Minogue’s body of work could easily fill four discs or more, so a compromise was met with the reissuing of a new three-disc format, coupled with yet another tour.
Now, to round out 2019, we are blessed yet again with another “Kylie gift,” in the form of the double-album Golden Live In Concert. The Princess of Pop just does not stop.
Whilst Golden Live in Concert pays homage to the recent release of the same name and features eight songs from her most recent studio effort, this album is essentially a whittled down live version of the aforementioned Step Back In Time collection. Now, there is nothing wrong with this, especially given that Minogue has been making music for more than three decades. When your musical canon is this extensive, along with your obvious longevity as a pop and cultural icon, you know that fans are not just there for the new music, but the classics too. Golden Live In Concert doesn’t fail to deliver on all accounts.
Standout moments abound across the nearly two-hour affair, including her sampling of Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls” at the beginning of a very discoesque version of “The Locomotion.” A stunning cover of “Blue Velvet,” originally made famous by Tony Bennett back in 1951, is a surprising but welcome addition to her repertoire. “Lost Without You” from Golden sounds absolutely delicious live, with some serious guitar work that adds a rock feel to the performance.
Whilst not a game-changer for Minogue, Golden Live is most definitely an album executed with professionalism and dedication. It highlights once again that her live singing voice is in fine form, as she commands massive, global audiences with her unaffected stage presence. Although it encapsulates a tour in support of her Golden album, it doesn’t leave any fans feeling isolated on the strength of a slew of classic Minogue hits from 1987 through to 2019, some reworked and some left untouched, but all in fine form. Not an easy feat for even the most seasoned of performers, but something that Minogue manages to make look incredibly effortless yet again. All in all, a great album to add your collection.
