Jorja Smith is an English singer-songwriter who's fresh on the scene, with a distinctive voice and sound. Her debut album Lost & Found combines great production value, millennial-esque R&B and scorching lyrics. The 21-year-old West Midlands native is a classically trained singer who dropped her first track, the searing "Blue Lights," in 2016 and now gives the world a full platter of her musical talents with the highly anticipated Lost & Found.
The twelve tracks are a vibrant blend of invigorating melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, combining new sounds tinged with vintage influence. While her vocal stylings have been compared to Adele and FKA Twigs, there are some shades of Minnie Riperton and Erykah Badu. The opening title track "Lost & Found" delivers a heartfelt reflection on the inescapable loss of innocence in growing up. The second track "Teenage Fantasy" is a real burner, with Smith flexing her disciplined vocals.
However, despite her gifted vocals and the sleek production of the material, Smith could stand to mix it up a bit as far as sounds and themes go. Most of her songs are ballads and none-too-cheerful. Surely she's too young to be this depressed!
"Lifeboats (Freestyle)" varies from her standard sound, as she showcases her gift for rapping freestyle and her bars are straight fire. "February 3" and "The One" are silky smooth poetry that captivate with their raw emotion and comfort with their messages.
Overall, Jorja Smith's debut is a reminder that all is not lost with current music. Lost & Found should definitely find a place in your record collection.
