WELCOME BACK WAX: The Spice Girls’ ‘Spiceworld’ Returns on Vinyl, Alongside ‘Greatest Hits’ Collection

For several years now, fans of the Spice Girls have been clamoring for an extensive reissue campaign that revisits the British pop phenom’s much beloved canon. Now, courtesy of UMe/Virgin EMI, the group’s enthusiasts now have plenty of cause to celebrate, as both Spiceworld (1997) and Greatest Hits (2007) have been reissued on vinyl and are available in stores as of today, March 13th.

Spiceworld is the quintet’s follow-up to their blockbusting debut Spice (1996) and further expanded on their clever pop approach. The Greatest Hits singles compilation was initially issued in the wake of the first Spice Girls reunion that kicked off in late 2007 and included two new tracks, “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” and “Voodoo.”  To commemorate their second reunion, the compilation was re-released as a limited edition vinyl reissue last year.

The respective album artwork associated with Spiceworld and Greatest Hits remains intact for the vinyl rollout—but there are no B-sides, outtakes or extras otherwise included. However, it is hoped that with the renewed success of these two albums on this format, a broader remastering campaign—to embrace both vinyl and compact disc mediums—will materialize. In the meantime, there is plenty to celebrate and enjoy with these current iterations of Spiceworld and Greatest Hits hitting the marketplace once again.

Quentin Harrison is the author of Record Redux: Spice Girls, the first written overview of the Spice Girls collective and individual canon which was originally published in 2016. He is currently working on an overhauled volume of the book to be made available for purchase in late December 2020; the first edition has been discontinued in lieu of the forthcoming issuance of the revamped book. Harrison has published four other books in his 'Record Redux Series' on Carly Simon, Donna Summer, Madonna and Kylie Minogue that are currently available physically and digitally.
