Although Neil Young’s fourth studio album proved a divisive proposition for critics upon its arrival in February 1972, it’s an unequivocal fact that Harvest remains firmly entrenched within the upper tier of the icon’s discography among fans. Which helps to explain why it was the best-selling LP released in the United States in 1972 and endures as Young’s most commercially successful album of his career, with its cumulative, multi-platinum sales to date more than double the volume of his second highest-selling effort, 1970’s After the Gold Rush.
To extend the celebration of Harvest’s half-century milestone, Young has partnered with his long-time label Reprise Records to curate a pair of expanded box sets, available in CD and vinyl formats. Slated for release on December 2nd, the thoughtfully constructed packages include the original album, three studio outtakes (“Bad Fog of Loneliness,” “Journey Through the Past,” and “Dance Dance Dance”) on CD/7” vinyl, the unreleased live 1971 BBC solo performance on CD, LP and DVD, the rare two-hour Harvest Time documentary film with behind-the-scenes footage of Harvest’s creation, a hardbound book with never-seen-before images and a fold-out poster.
