We’d like to extend our gratitude to the good folks over at Music On Vinyl for recently dusting off this gem of an album in the form of its resplendent vinyl reissue campaign. Originally released in the UK in 1997 and subsequently in the US the following year, Formica Blues is, rather remarkably considering how captivating its songs and cool, cinematic flare are, the only studio LP that Mono—comprised of vocalist Siobhan de Maré and producer-instrumentalist Martin Vigo—ever released together.

An exquisitely orchestrated mélange of various electronic and jazz-imbued musical ingredients that is ripe for rediscovery nearly 25 years on from its initial arrival, the enduringly lush Formica Blues contains multiple standout moments, including lead single “Life in Mono” (which also featured on the 1998 Great Expectations soundtrack), “Silicone,” “Slimcea Girl” and “Disney Town.”

If you have room to spare on your record shelves, adding this wonderful album in 180-gram audiophile vinyl form is strongly recommended. Listen to Formica Blues below and then snag your copy of the far more gratifying physical album if you love what you’ve heard.

With her debut solo affair, Ellis-Bextor made the dancefloor feel elegant and faintly surreal, a place where heartbreak could wear lipstick and emotional catastrophe could arrive with a four-on-the-floor beat.
