FOR-THE-RECORD: Luna Preps ‘A Sentimental Education’ Covers Album

July 1, 2017 Justin Chadwick

Editor’s Note: “For-the-Record” is our new recurring series that shines a bright light on crowdfunding initiatives for our favorite artists’ forthcoming albums. If you enjoy what you read (and hear) below, please consider getting involved by providing your support for the record via the links provided!

While the Albumism team and I are still reveling in the wondrous sounds of Britta Phillips’ debut solo album Luck or Magic released just over a year ago, we’re eager with anticipation for her band’s upcoming eighth studio album. A nod to Gustave Flaubert’s 1869 novel and due to arrive in September, Luna’s A Sentimental Education is comprised of ten cover versions that find the quartet of Phillips, her husband Dean Wareham, Sean Eden and Lee Ball drawing inspiration from relatively obscure fare originally recorded by rock’s most beloved artists including David Bowie, Bob Dylan, The Cure, Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, and the Velvet Underground.

Though I’m personally partial to their original compositions, the indie-pop stalwarts have always demonstrated a penchant for reimagining others’ work in fine form, as arguably best evidenced by their renditions of Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot’s “Bonnie and Clyde” from Penthouse (1995) and Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine” from The Days of Our Nights (1999).

Those who have read Albumism’s pages closely already know that we are huge champions of the DIY and crowdfunding-driven approaches to recording, releasing and promoting new music. Hence why we consider Luna’s PledgeMusic campaign behind A Sentimental Education and complementary instrumental EP A Place Of Greater Safety (which references Hilary Mantel’s 1992 historical novel of the same name) to be such a worthwhile campaign. We’ve pledged our support and we encourage you to do the same here.
