Artist: Sade
Song: “The Big Unknown”
Album: Widows Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (due in stores November 16th)
Nearly nine years have elapsed since Sade—the band and the singer-songwriter herself—dropped their sixth studio album Soldier of Love (2010), but recent signals suggest that the long wait for the band’s seventh LP will be relieved soon. Back in March, “Flower of the Universe” surfaced from the A Wrinkle in Time Soundtrack, followed a few months later by the band’s co-founder Stuart Matthewman revealing that he and his colleagues are “working on a new album” during a brief interview with Rated R&B.
And now comes the arrival of “The Big Unknown,” the piano-driven new track lifted from the soundtrack to the Steve McQueen directed, Viola Davis starring Widows, which premieres in theaters this Friday, November 16th. While it’s always a welcome event to feast our ears on new music from Ms. Adu and crew, these back-to-back soundtrack features are not quite the thrilling returns to form many of us have been impatiently awaiting. Instead, they’re solid, serviceable tracks that arguably sound like tunes from the new album recording sessions deemed expendable enough to serve as early primers for the really great stuff on the horizon from the group.
