“Get it Lady G” I see written in the comments on YouTube underneath the premiere of the video for Lady Gaga’s new single “Stupid Love.” With this bop sitting at over 15 million views in just two days, I think it’s safe to say she most definitely “got it.”
The much anticipated first single from the upcoming and as yet untitled album, scheduled for release sometime this year, is a firm hark back to classic Gaga in all her electro-pop glory. The beautifully awkward Gaga that we were first introduced to back in 2008 has returned and the world, it appears, has breathed a sigh of relief.
The accompanying video is set in a futuristic world named “Chromatica” governed by warring tribes who are confronted by Gaga’s pink posse seeking to restore world order with a kinder, more loving approach. In the superfan made documentary “My Name Is Lady Gaga,” the artist herself states, “I want the imagery to be so strong that the fans want to eat and taste and lick every part of us.” A statement that gives early and very clear insight into Gaga’s mindset regarding the visual component of her artistry and something that has clearly been revisited with “Stupid Love.”
Given that Gaga’s last studio album in 2016 was the country/pop rock Joanne, followed up with the multi-award winning soundtrack to A Star Is Born in 2018, it is safe to say that Gaga has proven all the naysayers wrong where her talent and ability has been called into question as nothing more than “shock pop.” Lady Gaga is one of pop’s most gifted and well-rounded figures, not to mention the cultural impact she has had and continues to have on a global scale.
“Stupid Love” may be seen as “just” a return to her electro-pop and dance roots, but it is also a brilliantly pure pop song, that continues her incredible legacy and has filled a void that many of us did not realize needed filling.
