A few months remain until Fantastic Negrito delivers his forthcoming album and companion film White Jesus Black Problems on June 3rd courtesy of Storefront Records, but if the project’s first two singles and their accompanying videos offer any indication, well, we’re all in for aural, lyrical and visual treats in abundance. All things we’ve grown to expect whenever the Oakland-based musical renaissance man blesses us with new music.
The follow-up to the Oakland-based Negrito’s GRAMMY Award-winning 2020 album Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?, White Jesus Black Problems is inspired by the real-life history of his seventh-generation white Scottish grandmother (Grandma Gallamore), an indentured servant, and his seventh-generation African American enslaved grandfather (Grandfather Courage), who rebelled against the racist institutions of 1750s colonial Virginia through their bravery and love for each other.
Following the recently released lead single “Highest Bidder,” today Negrito has unveiled the latest preview of the album in the form of the rousing, shapeshifting ballad “Oh Betty,” which embodies his unique penchant for transforming blues, rock and soul influences into a truly distinctive and instantly memorable sound.
“This was a very emotional song to record. It’s the story of my grandfather, of his humanity,” Negrito confides in an official statement. “He’s toiling in captivity and the only light at the end of this dark hallway is his love, Betty Gallamore, and he won’t give up on her. So that’s Grandpa Courage reaching out and singing that ballad.”
