NEW MUSIC WE LOVE: De La Soul Take Us on a World Tour in New “Royalty Capes” Video

November 11, 2017 Albumism Staff

Artist: De La Soul
Song: “Royalty Capes”
Album: and the Anonymous Nobody… (in stores now)
Buy: Amazon | iTunes
Upcoming Tour: Dates

Though nearly 15 months have elapsed since De La Soul released their ambitiously orchestrated ninth studio album and the Anonymous Nobody… back in August of 2016, there’s always great reason to revisit its brilliance and the legendary trio’s enduring lyrical and sonic chemistry. Hence why the surprise arrival of the video for the regal, brass-infused single “Royalty Capes” is such a welcome revelation.

Directed by J Anders Urmacher and featuring the spoken-word eloquence of Gina Loring, the beautifully shot and edited clip begins with founding member David Jolicoeur a.k.a. Dave discussing his recent tussle with congestive heart failure and his desire to stay on the road with his De La brethren Posdnuos and Mase. “I’m ready just to get back to the stage,” he confesses. “I miss that. I love travelling. I love being around my guys. And I want that back.”

The bulk of the video features footage of the trio’s world tour, including stops in Los Angeles, Nice and Sète (France), Rotterdam, Toronto, and Brussels. Hip-hop royalty, indeed.
